Italian Sushi is a playful and delicious fusion appetizer that combines beloved Italian ingredients in a beautiful sushi-inspired presentation. Layers of savory cured meats, creamy cheese, fresh basil, and vibrant vegetables are rolled together to create bite-sized treats that are both elegant and easy to make. Perfect for parties, picnics, or light lunches, these colorful rolls offer all the flavors of an Italian antipasto platter in a fun new form.

The first time I made Italian Sushi, my husband couldn’t stop laughing at the name. He expected traditional sushi, but after one bite, he was completely hooked. Even our little family loved picking up the colorful slices and discovering the layers of cheese, meats, and fresh vegetables inside. What started as a creative appetizer for a weekend gathering quickly became one of our favorite recipes for entertaining guests. Now, whenever we have friends over, someone inevitably asks, “Are you making that Italian sushi again?” and the platter always disappears in no time.

Why This Italian Sushi Recipe

  • A creative twist on classic Italian antipasto flavors.
  • No raw fish or special sushi-making skills required.
  • Perfect for parties, appetizers, and holiday gatherings.
  • Features layers of creamy cheese, savory meats, and fresh herbs.
  • Easy to customize with your favorite Italian ingredients.
  • Beautiful presentation that impresses guests.
  • Can be prepared ahead of time and sliced just before serving.

Ingredients

  • 0.44 lb (200 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 0.22 lb (100 g) sliced mozzarella cheese
  • 0.33 lb (150 g) thinly sliced salami
  • 0.22 lb (100 g) prosciutto or turkey slices
  • 0.18 lb (80 g) roasted red peppers, drained and sliced
  • 0.11 lb (50 g) fresh baby spinach or basil leaves
  • 0.15 lb (70 g) sun-dried tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 0.02 lb (10 g) Italian seasoning
  • 0.02 lb (10 g) grated Parmesan cheese
  • Large flour tortillas or flatbread wraps for rolling

Directions

  1. Lay a tortilla or flatbread on a clean work surface and spread a thin, even layer of softened cream cheese over the surface.
  2. Arrange slices of mozzarella, salami, and prosciutto evenly across the wrap.
  3. Add the roasted red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, and fresh spinach or basil leaves.
  4. Sprinkle Italian seasoning and grated Parmesan cheese over the filling for added flavor.
  5. Starting from one edge, tightly roll the tortilla into a log. Wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to help it firm up.
  6. Once chilled, remove the plastic wrap and use a sharp knife to slice the roll into bite-sized rounds resembling sushi pieces.
  7. Arrange the slices on a serving platter and garnish with extra basil leaves or Parmesan cheese if desired.

Notes

  • Pepperoni, mortadella, or grilled chicken can be substituted for the cured meats.
  • For a lighter version, use low-fat cream cheese and turkey slices.
  • Whole wheat wraps work well and add extra fiber.
  • Refrigerating the rolls before slicing helps them hold their shape.
  • Serve with marinara sauce, pesto, or balsamic glaze for dipping.
  • These rolls are ideal for make-ahead entertaining and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two days.
  • Add olives, arugula, or marinated artichokes for even more Mediterranean flavor.
