Turkish Manti are tiny, handmade dumplings filled with seasoned meat, traditionally served with creamy garlic yogurt and a rich, spiced butter sauce. This iconic dish is beloved for its comforting flavors and beautiful presentation. Though it takes a little time to prepare, every bite is worth it—making it a perfect recipe for special meals or when you want to impress your guests.

The first time I made manti at home, it turned into a full family activity. We sat around the table folding the tiny dumplings together, laughing at our different shapes and sizes. My husband couldn’t stop sneaking a few before they were even served! Now, it’s become one of our most cherished traditions—especially on weekends when we slow down and cook together. It’s more than just a meal; it’s a moment we all look forward to.

Why This Turkish Manti

  • Authentic Flavor: Traditional spices and garlic yogurt create a rich, comforting taste.
  • Perfectly Balanced Dish: Savory dumplings paired with creamy and buttery sauces.
  • Fun to Make: A great recipe to prepare with family or friends.
  • Impressive Presentation: Beautiful, bite-sized dumplings that look as good as they taste.
  • Customizable Filling: Works well with different meats or even vegetarian options.

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 400 g (0.88 lb) all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg (about 50 g / 0.11 lb)
  • 120 ml (0.26 lb) water
  • 5 g (0.01 lb) salt

For the Filling:

  • 350 g (0.77 lb) ground beef or lamb
  • 1 small onion (about 120 g / 0.26 lb), finely grated
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt

For the Yogurt Sauce:

  • 400 g (0.88 lb) plain yogurt
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • Pinch of salt

For the Butter Sauce:

  • 60 g (0.13 lb) butter
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Optional: dried mint or chili flakes

Directions:

  1. Prepare the dough:
In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add the egg and water, then knead until a firm, smooth dough forms. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  2. Make the filling:
Combine the ground meat, grated onion, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Mix well and set aside.
  3. Roll and cut the dough:
Roll the dough thinly on a floured surface. Cut into small squares (about 2–3 cm each).
  4. Fill the dumplings:
Place a small amount of filling in the center of each square. Fold the corners together and pinch to seal, forming tiny dumplings.
  5. Cook the manti:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the dumplings and cook for about 8–10 minutes, or until tender and cooked through.
  6. Prepare the yogurt sauce:
Mix yogurt with garlic and salt until smooth.
  7. Make the butter sauce:
Melt butter in a small pan and stir in paprika (and mint or chili flakes if using). Cook briefly until fragrant.
  8. Assemble the dish:
Drain the manti and place them on a serving plate. Spoon the garlic yogurt over the top, then drizzle with the warm spiced butter.
  9. Serve:
Serve immediately while warm and enjoy!

Notes:

  • Time-Saving Tip: You can make the dumplings ahead of time and freeze them for later use.
  • Filling Variations: Try ground chicken, turkey, or a vegetarian mixture like mushrooms and lentils.
  • Yogurt Tip: Use thick, full-fat yogurt for the best creamy texture.
  • Serving Idea: Add a sprinkle of dried mint or sumac for extra flavor.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 2 days and reheat gently.
