This is one of those recipes that makes our little family dinner feel like a special occasion. My husband loves the combination of sweet and savory flavors, and goat cheese is one of his favorites, so I knew this would be a winner. The first time I made these little stacks, everyone was impressed by how elegant they looked. What I love most is that they seem fancy enough for entertaining but are actually quite simple to prepare. Now I often make them when we have guests because they always become a conversation starter around the table.

Ingredients
Makes 4 individual Napoleons
For the Sweet Potato Layers
- 700 g / 1.54 lb sweet potatoes, peeled
- 25 g / 0.06 lb extra-virgin olive oil
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (about 1 g / 0.002 lb)
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme (about 1 g / 0.002 lb)
- 1/2 tsp salt (about 3 g / 0.007 lb)
- 1/4 tsp black pepper (about 0.5 g / 0.001 lb)
For the Goat Cheese Filling
- 180 g / 0.40 lb soft goat cheese
- 60 g / 0.13 lb cream cheese
- 15 g / 0.03 lb fresh lemon juice
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped (about 4 g / 0.009 lb)
- 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves (about 3 g / 0.007 lb)
- 1/4 tsp black pepper (about 0.5 g / 0.001 lb)
For the Finishing Drizzle
- 35 g / 0.08 lb honey
- 15 g / 0.03 lb balsamic vinegar
- 10 g / 0.02 lb extra-virgin olive oil
- Pinch of salt
Optional Garnishes
- 25 g / 0.06 lb toasted walnuts or pecans, chopped
- Fresh thyme or microgreens
- Flaky sea salt
- A pinch of chili flakes
Directions
- Heat the oven: Preheat the oven to 200°C / 400°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Slice the sweet potatoes: Cut the peeled sweet potatoes into thin, even rounds, approximately 3–4 mm thick. Keeping the slices uniform helps them roast evenly and makes the stacks easier to assemble.
- Season and roast: Arrange the sweet potato slices on the baking sheet. Brush or toss them with olive oil, smoked paprika, thyme, salt, and pepper. Roast for approximately 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until tender and lightly caramelized around the edges.
- Prepare the goat cheese mixture: While the sweet potatoes roast, combine the goat cheese, cream cheese, lemon juice, parsley, thyme, and black pepper in a bowl. Mix until smooth and creamy. If the cheese is very firm, let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before mixing.
- Make the drizzle: Whisk together the honey, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, and a pinch of salt. If the honey is too thick, warm it gently for a few seconds so it drizzles easily.
- Start building the Napoleons: Place one roasted sweet potato slice on each serving plate. Add a small spoonful of the goat cheese mixture and spread it gently over the surface.
- Continue layering: Add another sweet potato slice followed by another layer of goat cheese. Repeat until each stack reaches the desired height, finishing with a sweet potato slice on top.
- Add the finishing touches: Drizzle the honey-balsamic mixture over each Napoleon. Sprinkle with toasted nuts, fresh thyme, flaky sea salt, or a few chili flakes if desired.
- Serve: Serve the Napoleons warm or slightly warm. For a more polished presentation, add a few drops of the drizzle around the plate before serving.
Notes
- Slice carefully: A mandoline can help create evenly thin sweet potato slices, but always use the safety guard when slicing.
- Don’t overcrowd the pan: Arrange the potatoes in a single layer so they roast and caramelize instead of steaming.
- Goat cheese substitute: Feta, ricotta, or whipped cream cheese can be used if you prefer a milder filling.
- Add more sweetness: A little extra honey or maple syrup pairs beautifully with the roasted sweet potato.
- Add some heat: Chili flakes or a pinch of cayenne create a delicious contrast with the creamy goat cheese.
- Nut-free option: Simply omit the nuts or replace them with toasted pumpkin seeds.
- Extra freshness: Add arugula, baby spinach, or microgreens between the layers for a fresh, peppery element.
- Make ahead: The sweet potato slices and goat cheese mixture can be prepared ahead. Assemble shortly before serving for the best presentation.
- Storage: Keep leftovers refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Reheat the sweet potatoes gently before assembling if desired.
- Serving idea: Pair this Napoleon with a crisp green salad for a light vegetarian meal, or serve it alongside roasted chicken or grilled fish as an elegant side.
- Nutrition: Nutritional values will vary depending on the type of goat cheese, amount of honey, oil, and optional toppings used.
