Nothing says comfort quite like a warm apple crisp fresh from the oven. This Ultimate Apple Crisp Recipe combines tender, spiced apples with a buttery, golden oat topping that’s crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It’s a classic dessert that’s simple to make, perfect for family gatherings, and tastes even better with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top!

This apple crisp has quickly become a tradition in our home, especially during the fall. My husband loves sneaking into the kitchen while it’s baking just to enjoy the cinnamon-scented air, and the kids always ask, “Is it ready yet?” by the time the oven timer dings. It’s not just a dessert for us — it’s a cozy family ritual that makes everyone gather around the table. We’ve even started making it year-round because nobody wants to wait until autumn to enjoy it!

Why This Ultimate Apple Crisp Recipe

  • Cozy & Comforting – Warm spiced apples paired with a crunchy oat topping make the perfect dessert.

  • Simple Ingredients – Made with pantry staples like apples, oats, butter, and sugar.

  • Crowd-Pleaser – Loved by kids and adults alike; perfect for holidays or weeknight treats.

  • Customizable – Works with different apple varieties or even pears and peaches.

  • Best Served Warm – Delicious on its own but next-level when topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling

  • 900 g (2 lbs) Fuji or Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced

  • 60 ml (¼ cup) orange juice

  • 50 g (¼ cup) granulated sugar

  • 50 g (¼ cup) brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

For the Crisp Topping

  • 190 g (1 ½ cups) all-purpose flour

  • 150 g (¾ cup) granulated sugar

  • 150 g (¾ cup) light brown sugar, packed

  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

  • 100 g (1 cup) rolled oats (not instant)

  • 225 g (½ lb / 2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and diced

Directions

  1. Preheat oven – Set your oven to 175°C (350°F). Lightly grease an 8×8-inch baking pan.

  2. Prepare the apple mixture – In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, orange juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix until the apples are evenly coated.

  3. Make the crisp topping – In another bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, salt, oats, and diced butter. Use a pastry cutter, fork, or your hands to mash everything together until crumbly.

  4. Assemble – Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared pan. Sprinkle the oat topping generously over the apples.

  5. Bake – Bake uncovered for 30–40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.

  6. Serve – Enjoy warm on its own, or add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate treat.

Notes

  • Apple Varieties: Granny Smith gives a tart flavor, while Fuji adds natural sweetness. A mix of both works beautifully.

  • Make Ahead: Assemble the crisp up to 1 day in advance and refrigerate. Bake just before serving.

  • Gluten-Free Option: Substitute the flour with almond flour or a gluten-free baking blend.

  • Extra Crunch: Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the topping for a nutty twist.

  • Storage: Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for best results.
