- 1 lb skirt steak cut thinly (flank or tenderloin are also good options).
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil plus additional for frying
- 1 large white onion, chopped finely
- 1 1/2 cups chopped carrots julienned
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger grated
- 1/2 teaspoon dried red chilli flakes
- 1/2 cup light soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons vinegar rice vinegar, white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup brown sugar lightly packed
- Toast 2 tablespoons of sesame seeds
- 1/4 cup thinly sliced green onions
Mix the steak and corn starch together in a large bowl. Set aside.
Place the onion and vegetable oil in a saucepan. Heat on medium heat. Sauté for 2 minutes, until the onions become translucent.
Sauté the carrots with the onions for 3-4 minutes, or until tender.
Next, add the chili flakes, ginger, garlic and ginger. Mix in the onions and carrots. Cook for about 1-2 minutes.
Finally, combine the vinegar, sesame oil and sesame seed oil. Mix well.
Reduce the heat to simmer, and let the sauce thicken slightly.
To achieve the best frying temperature, heat about 2 cups vegetable oil in a large skillet. To fry the beef, shake off any excess corn starch and fry each piece individually until golden brown. This takes approximately 3-4 minutes. Place the fried beef on a towel.
Mix the sauce mixture with the fried beef. Add green onions. Serve immediately
